Point-of-Use Water Disinfection and Zinc Treatment Project (POUZN)

Goal

Increasing the use of POU water purification methods and devices through self help groups (SHGs)

Objectives

  • Awareness generation amongst low-income group of rural and urban community regarding the use of safe and hygienic drinking water
  • Promotion of water purifying devices through institutional delivery mechanism by involving community based self help groups
  • Creation of awareness and an enabling environment to increase the use of POU devices amongst lower-income households
  • Explore the possibilities for sustainable POU to club it with other micro-credit interventions

Key Activities

  1. Meeting with SHGs regarding the safe drinking water
  2. Generating the awareness of water borne disease at SHGs level
  3. Meetings with different stakeholders at SHGs level
  4. Awareness generation programme at community level regarding different component of water purification methods
  5. Generating the awareness of one to one visit with SHGs members regarding the safe drinking water

Achievements

  • 67 per cent SHG members convinced for adopting chlorination techniques for water purification. Around 27 per cent members are regular POU device users
  • Total penetration of 93.7 per cent has been achieved for SHGs and 167 non-SHGs
